This position is with Medmarc, a products liability underwriter to the medical technology and life sciences industries.
Medmarc is a member of the ProAssurance family of companies.
The Senior Life Sciences Underwriter (the Senior Underwriter ) executes on the strategic initiatives and business plan of this specialized insurance carrier that provides products liability coverage to the life sciences industry, including the manufacturers and distributors of medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
He or she will write profitable new business and retain existing policyholders in an assigned regional territory.
The Senior Underwriter will make underwriting decisions within his or her authority with little oversight from senior members of the team and conduct account-related research independently.
The Senior Underwriter will interact frequently with Medmarc s brokers and insureds and provide excellent customer service in order to develop and build broker relationships that will grow his or her new-business pipeline.
The Senior Underwriter identifies target accounts and converts them to new-business opportunities.
The Senior Underwriter works with colleagues in Claims and Risk Management to analyze account-related data and formulate appropriate underwriting actions.
As the Senior Underwriter progresses in the job role, he/she will be comfortable working with a variety of accounts that Medmarc insures, including those from most market segments.
Additional responsibilities for the Senior Underwriter include providing support to the Department s operations, such as by participating in projects or special initiatives.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities:
30% Underwrite new and renewal submissions to assess insurability.
Create terms and conditions for each applicant based on underwriting guidelines, program rates, and coverage forms.
Compare the year-over-year risk profile and loss information and take necessary steps to ensure that each risk is classified and priced appropriately.
20% Provide research related to developing risks and analyze loss exposures independently or with little oversight.
20%Assist with preparing coverage forms and endorsements for complex accounts at the direction of senior team members.
Secondary Duties:
10% Participate in meetings with brokers and policyholders individually or as a member of the account management team.
Qualifications/Requirements:
A Bachelor s Degree is required with a preference for study in Insurance, Business Administration, or Life/Biological Sciences.
This position requires a minimum of four to six years of experience in a casualty insurance environment.
Prior life science products liability or healthcare professional liability experience is preferred.
A CPCU, AIC, or ARM is highly desired.
Proven self-starter with strong multi-tasking and relationship management skills.

Able to make sound decisions and devise appropriate solutions.
Able to review the work of others, provide feedback and approve other underwriters quotations.
Excellent listening, speaking, writing and presentation skills.

Solid knowledge of rating and documentation management and workflow systems.
Able to create, build and develop superior relationships with agencies.
Able to create, build and develop superior relationships with internal colleagues in different departments within the Business Unit, and ProAssurance across departments.
This position requires up to 30% travel (when conditions are safe for travel).

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
